Top Musical Hits & Samples

On this page we provide top-100 hit lists for each year of the 1960s, and some sample tunes. We are legally prevented from posting artist's recordings on this site, but we've provided a large number of MIDI files you play to refresh your memory about particular songs. You might also find the full version of selected tunes posted on such websites as YouTube. Simply search on the song or artist's name.

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface file. These are synthetic songs generated by computer from original recordings. MIDI files are often used on the Web to avoid copyright infringement liability. Whereas original recordings are usually copyrighted intellectual property, MIDI files are computer-generated facsimiles of those recordings, and can be shared freely without legal restrictions. Although some MIDIs are quite good (e.g. Hey Joe), they are certainly no substitute for the real thing. However, they can still spark memories by helping us recall what a song from long ago sounded like.

Ballad of the Green Beret This 1966 song was written and sung by Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler, a real U.S. Army Green Beret. Sadler wrote this song to idolize the troops in Vietnam when public opinion was low. In the US, this was the biggest-selling single of 1966. It was a #1 hit for 5 weeks and was the #21 song of the '60s.

Star Spangled Banner Jimi Hendrix live at Woodstock - this tortured anthem is perhaps THE definitive Vietnam War protest song. Many don't realize Hendrix was himself a former U.S. Army Paratrooper - a fact he seldom spoke of.

Yippie! We're all gonna die. Country Joe McDonald, at Woodstock - A comedic yet black, politically-charged sing-along musical commentary on the Vietnam War, sometimes called the "The 'Fish' Cheer, or the "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag" (warning - contains gratuitous profanity). McDonald is a U.S. Navy veteran.
